According to UNICEF over one fifth of Syria's schools have suffered either direct physical damage or are being used to shelter displaced persons. With over half the afflicted population being school children, many have already missed out on almost two years of schooling. The escalating violence has threatened the education of half a million students - that's quite comfortably the total population of the city of Manchester
