Story...‘Before the conflict, we lived a normal life.'...

By Sara Guy

Zaynah* is six years old, and she is being treated in a clinic in Jordan. When we met her she was suffering from cold. She has a pain in her foot, and walked half an hour to get to the clinic, with her mother and aunt.
Thirteen family members have been living together in a small house in Jordan for eight months.
The men are still in Syria.
‘It is difficult being a woman without a husband here,’ says Zaynah’s mother.
‘We used to rely on our husbands to help us. It is very hard to get enough food. We ate yesterday, but not this morning.
‘Before the conflict, we lived a normal life. We were housewives and our husbands went to work in the morning and came home in the evenings.’
Zaynah’s family decided to leave their home town of Daraa because of all the shelling, bombing, and arbitrary arrests and beatings of civilians on the streets.
‘The killing of young people in Syria is the saddest thing,’ Zaynah’s mother says.
‘We were forced to leave our houses. This is very sad for us.’
